Wishing to leave exile in France and open a convent in Lousiana for others who escaped the French rule, Mother Saint Michel wrote to the Pope for permission. She prayed to Mary and wished to honor her as Our Lady of Prompt Succor in Louisianna if the Pope granted permission. Because of her prayers, the Pope granted permission and, in thanksgiving, Mother Saint Michel ordered the creation of a statue which has been displayed in Louisiana ever since. Andrew Jackson also prayed before this statue before the Battle of New Orleans. The Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Prompt Succor is the patron of Louisianna and against hurricanes.
