Pope St. John XXIII, affectionately known as "Good Pope John" or "il Papa buono," was probably one of the most impactful people of his century and of modern Popes - yet, he preferred to stay out of the limelight and had a sense of "normal" or "ordinary" about him that has been admired by many. Shortly after being ordained a priest, St. John was conscripted and served as a stretcher-bearer in World War 1. He served in many other roles such as a nuncio, a delegate, cardinal, and, later, Pope. He was instrumental in the Second Vatican Council, was a peacemaker, and lived, according to Pope Francis, a virtuous and model life.
