St. Philomena, the daughter of a Greek king who converted to Christianity, moved with her family to Rome as her father worked for peace. In Rome, St. Philomena caught the eye of Emperor Diocletian - after refusing to marry him, he lashed out and subjected her to scourging, throwing her into the water attached to an anchor, and shot with arrows. God was on her side, however, and she was miraculously saved each time, resulting in many converting to Christianity because of the miracles. She was later martyred by the Emperor.
